Esquimaux

Esquimaux formed in Los Angeles, CA in 2004. Core members are Heather Brown Dodge, Graham Dodge, and James Sajor. In their early years, they were often joined live by bassist Mike Sattin and drummer Al Sgro, among others.

Notable works include the Tiger EP engineered by Steve Albini and featuring drummer Eric Stock of Stroke 9, the track “Honey & Dear” featuring vocals by Gary Jules, the track “For The Record” featuring bassist Brian Gibson of Lightning Bolt, and the track/single “Gleaming the Truth,” also featuring Eric Stock.

The band was on a 17-year hiatus until 2026, when they regrouped to record a new album and complete the single “Bricks and Bones” — a track they originally started recording in 2008.

The band name is a reference to the 1989 film Heathers, in which JD forges a note for Heather Duke by underlining the single word “eskimo” in her copy of Moby Dick — which is actually spelled “esquimaux” in the book. In the film, that word becomes over-extrapolated with meaning by other characters seeking to explain Heather’s motivation.
